IBC Debut for Calrec's New Modular Radio System

At the recent IBC conference, audio equipment manufacturer Calrec Audio unveiled its latest innovation: a modular, expandable IP-based radio system called Type R. This new system combines standard networking technology with configurable soft panels that can be tailored to operator needs.

Type R's physical control system consists of three slimline panels: a fader panel, a large soft panel, and a small soft panel. Each is compatible with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and powered over Ethernet to minimize cabling.

Core Technology at the Heart

At the heart of Type R is a simple 2U core with integrated I/O resources that allows customers to get up and running immediately. A single core can power up to three independent mixing environments, with no sharing of DSP resources.

Type R's modular design makes it suitable for use as independent studio consoles, microphone processors, or utility mixing. The system's flexibility is further enhanced by its AES67 compatibility, which enables the creation of multiple mixing engines that can be combined and used independently.

Brio Consoles Get an Upgrade

Calrec also showcased upgrades to its Brio consoles, including expanded channel capability. The Brio12 and Brio36 audio consoles now have increased channel counts, thanks to new DSP expansion packs. These packs are available for all Brio consoles running software version v1.1.6 or above.

The Brio36 includes a range of on-board I/O, making it operational straight out of the box. It also features full Hydra2 network compatibility and a competitive price point that reflects its rich broadcast feature set.
