Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve Studio and Advanced Panel played a key role in delivering the final color grade for Universal Pictures' Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Goldcrest Post, a leading post-production facility, relied on the software to achieve a lush, vibrant look while retaining natural contrast levels.
Collaborative Approach
Supervising digital colorist Adam Glasman worked closely with director of photography Oscar Faura and the ILM VFX team to ensure a consistent color palette throughout the film. The collaboration began with Faura providing CDL files for each scene, which served as a starting point for the grade.
Enhancing the Look
Glasman notes that significant changes to the look could affect the lighting of computer graphics (CG) involved in the film. To mitigate this risk, he worked with Faura to complete a rough grade of the film and screened it to the director, editor, and VFX team to ensure everyone was comfortable with the direction of the grade.
ILM Integration
The VFX team at ILM received CDL files from Goldcrest, allowing them to work on CG elements while seeing something close to the final look of the film. This collaboration enabled Glasman to make adjustments while ensuring the CG fit seamlessly into the background plate.
Island Scenes
The island scenes in which the volcano erupts presented a unique challenge, with bright and cheerful footage that needed to be darkened and subdued to reflect the ash cloud covering the island. Glasman worked closely with Faura to achieve this look, resulting in a critical sequence that sets the tone for the rest of the film.
