WRAL, a high-definition broadcasting pioneer, has found a solution to unlock the value of its extensive archive. The company is using Nexidia's Dialogue Search technology to search through its recently digitized library of over 26,000 video tapes, dating back to 1976.
Unlocking the Archive
The challenge was finding a way to locate specific spoken words or phrases within the archive without much metadata to aid in the search. Nexidia's Dialogue Search technology uses patented phonetic search algorithms to enable fast and accurate searching of audio content, regardless of logging, transcription, or captions.
WRAL's director of engineering and operations, Peter Sockett, explained that the company digitized its archive not only to preserve the assets but also to complete its transition to a tapeless workflow. However, without effective search capabilities, finding specific clips or assets was becoming increasingly difficult.
Finding What You Need
With Dialogue Search, WRAL can now locate spoken words and phrases in seconds, giving the company the flexibility to repurpose its archive more easily. The technology scans audio content almost instantly, creating an index of elementary sounds of speech called phonemes. This approach provides unprecedented accuracy in search results, even when dealing with varied accents and background noise.
WRAL is using Dialogue Search in conjunction with its Sony Optical Disc Archive installation, which was introduced through an alliance between Nexidia and Sony Professional Services.
