Challenging Audio Environment

When production sound mixer Frank Stettner began working on HBO's new mini-series 'Show Me a Hero', he knew he needed an audio recorder that could handle the demands of capturing high-quality audio in a complex environment.

The series, based on the real-life story of former Yonkers Mayor Nick Wasicko, required Stettner to record multiple ISO tracks to capture the heated city council meetings and protests. To achieve this, he chose Sound Devices' 970 audio recorder for its robust 64-track capabilities.

Recording Complex Scenes

To recreate the city council meetings, several cast members played the roles of council members, the mayor, and the clerk, with a microphone positioned in front of each actor. Stettner also needed to record four to five speaking parts from actors depicting hecklers in the crowd.

With two Sound Devices 970s running redundantly, Stettner was able to capture fast-paced dialogue from all angles, thanks to the devices' Dante-enabled tracks and ability to route audio over a LAN.
